 Internet Explorer 9 has officially been unveiled today at the annually-held Professional Developers Conference (PDC). In fact, as this article is being published here, attendants and speakers on the PDC conference are still talking about IE9 and other tech advances. You can check out the discussions yourself at the Microsoft's PDC2009 website.

We all know what Microsoft should do with IE9, and apparently their goals with IE9 is pretty much the same as we are since they are pretty obviously heading into the right direction. From the graphs shown in their presentation during the PDC, IE9 is depicted as faster, with more standards-compliant website rendering. The test is based on Webkit.org's SunSpider test, a browser testing site very commonly used for benchmarking browser performance. For a browser which is barely three weeks into development, that is really some achievement. 



According to them, they're also including 'hardware accelerated' rendering using Direct Write and Direct 2D, along with users' graphics card with the aid of DirectX D2D technology. This means that whether you're trying to do CSS3, Javascript or DHTML, IE9 should render things much faster. Stephen Sinofsky mentioned that one particularly impressive rendering showed how with the existing browser, Bing Maps could render a map at about 13-14 frames per second;  but using hardware acceleration,  it was running at 60 frames per second. We're talking about a new browser which performance is tripling its predecessors!


In other words, Internet Explorer 9 will be the first-ever browser to utilize both hardware and software to render its performance. So long your PC's graphic cards are high-end, you can literally expect IE9 to fly. Sweet, isn't it (pray that it wouldn't come out as a disappointment, though)?


As mentioned that IE9 is only three weeks old, we shouldn't be expecting its launch in the near future but then as Sinofsky mentioned, there's still lots of works to do. I think most of us would pretty much be willing to wait for Sinofsky's team to fully develop the new browser, wouldn't we?

Cloud security is slowly but surely becoming the trend for security applications. First we have Panda developing Panda Cloud Antivirus, then we have Trend Micro working on cloud detection and removal, resulting in Trend Micro Security Beta which was recently completed. Next, F-Secure joins in the fray by announcing that their 2010 products contains elements of cloud protection. New companies such as Immunet now also take this as an opportunity to enter the security software market by introducing Immunet Protect.


A-Squared is the most recent company joining this competition. Recently, they announced the beta version of their first-ever cloud security, MalAware on their official site. According to the official website, the basic idea of developing MalAware is to have an incredibly lightweight tool (revealed as less than 1 MB in size) which at the meantime, can do enough to merit as a really good virus scanner. However, it is important to note that MalAware do not remove malwares from your PC; it only serves as a scanner. MalAware does not require installation to run; thus it is also a portable application.
Although MalAware comes with some basic signature detection in its file, most of the scanning jobs are done in the cloud.The cloud-based scanner will scan a PC's processes, memory and file for infections. Although it sound impossible, MalAware scans at a faster rate than the normal A-Squared product and is just as accurate as the normal product as well. If it discover signs of infections during its scans, it will introduce you to download the free version of A-Squared or the paid-for version of A-Squared Antimalware so as to remove the infections.

MalAware runs with Windows XP, Vista, 7 and all Server versions of Windows, and it requires a minimum 50MB of memory during scanning. Users with 512MB of RAM are considered meeting the requirement of MalAware. MalAware are also designed to run with other existing antivirus software.

After a 3-week leave for preparing my exams, finally i'm back and ready to rock. Well, the first thing i did when i get back on working out post is to browse the web and i immediately come across this little tool developed by an independant software writer known as SourceCodeBoy. This tool is called Classic Windows Start Menu...

Which leads us to a question for those Vista and 7 users: do you miss the old way how Start Menu works in Windows XP? In Windows Vista and 7, Microsoft had eliminated the old way Start Menu had worked since Windows 95 and of course, nowadays Start Menu is just designed to work under one single column in Vista and 7, so we are unlikely to get the old Start Menu back....or is it?

Apparently Classic Windows Start Menu can help get that back for you. What the tool does is basically recover the Windows XP classic menu for Windows Vista and Windows 7, without sacrificing the AeroGlass effects that are so tightly binded with Vista and 7 (with that, i mean glass and transparency). The result is a pretty clean-cut Start Menu which expands as you dive deeper, as shown in the image below:

Once executed, this tool will launch a Windows XP-style menu that you can call in the same ways you used to do before: Win key, Ctrl+Esc or clicking left mouse button on the Windows logo; if you click right button, the application will ask you to exit.


ClassicWinStartMenu updates menus every time, and shows you the last installed applications but, unfortunately, has not the drag & drop feature to add, remove, rename or sort items: You can do these on the original menu, and changes will be reflected into your new menu, except on sorting which might be solved in future releases.

Another fine feature for this little application is that for advanced users who loves to customize their desktop, Classic Windows Start Menu can be easily modified in terms of display languages, button iamges and even the left ribbon on the Start Menu; all you need is just some knowledge in script-editing!
